Because a pastel drawing is quicker to exceute compared to an oil painting, it is possible to complete the entire process with a sitting, or a series of sittings. The smaller sizes can be completed in two hours' time. Two separate hour-long sittings with a break in the middle usually works best.
For larger pastel projects it is best to meet with the client to determine what sort of portrait, what pose, what background and what mood are to be conveyed. The taking of photos facilitates this process. it is entirely painless and takes no more than an hour. At this same time I am also able to provide a series of thumbnail sketches which hint at the possible look of the completed work.
After the photographs have been developed a second meeting is helpful. Here the best elements are reviewed and together we agree as to how they might work best together. At this time or soon thereafter I am able to render a color study which will clearly foreshadow the completed piece.
At this point I retire to my studio to actually execute the commission. If at all possible, it's quite helpful to add finishing touches from a live sitting. This usually lasts no more than an hour.
For posthumous portraits, or whenever necessary due to circumstance, I am able to work entirely from a photograph.
And Voila! You now have a quality piece of artwork which will last a lifetime.
I guarantee all likenesses! Please contact me for more information. Thank you for your consideration.
